COURSE INSTRUCTOR

Dr Nicola Clayton is a well-recognised Clinical Specialist Speech Pathologist at Concord Repatriation General Hospital in Sydney with over 20 years in experience in complex dysphagia management. Dr Clayton has a strong track record and steep rising career trajectory with a high output relative to opportunity with over 30 peer reviewed publications, 3 book chapters, 8 professional practice documents and more than 80 presentations at scientific forums. She completed her Masters of Science in Medicine in 2007 (University of Sydney) exploring dysphagia in respiratory disease and her PhD in 2016 (University of Queensland) examining dysphagia and orofacial contracture management in severe burn injury. She holds honorary affiliations with the University of Queensland, University of Sydney and is internationally recognised for her expertise, research and education in the field of dysphagia, severe burn injury and critical care.

Dr Clayton is committed to the ongoing education of graduate and undergraduate students in the delivery of clinical care as well as research, extending across Speech Pathology, other Allied Health disciplines as well as Medicine and Nursing. She provides mentoring, supervision and guidance to clinicians on a national and international scale. She has long been involved in translating her research and clinical expertise into professional guidelines in the care of patients with communication and swallowing disorders in critical care, particularly patients with severe burn injury, tracheostomy and those requiring instrumental assessment. Dr Clayton is a key Australian instructor for Passy-Muir Tracheostomy Speaking Valve and for the Expiratory Muscle Strength Training device (EMST150). In addition, Dr Clayton is the NSW Dysphagia Interest Group Coordinator which delivers professional development opportunities to graduate and undergraduate Speech Pathologists across NSW and more recently nationwide.
